How the tax is built

  1. Add up your taxable income: salary and wages, self-employed profit, rent profit, interest and dividends.
  2. Tax the first $15,600 at 10.5%, the next slice up to $53,500 at 17.5%, and so on.
  3. Subtract tax already paid through PAYE, RWT on interest or withholding tax on schedular payments.
  4. Take off any credits, such as the independent earner tax credit or donation credits.

The ACC earners’ levy is not income tax, but it is collected with PAYE. On salary and wages it is 1.75% up to $156,641 of earnings. Self-employed people pay ACC levies directly to ACC instead.

Common questions

How much tax do I pay on $70,000 in NZ?

$13,221 of income tax for 2026–27, an average rate of 18.9%. Add $1,225 of ACC earners’ levy if it is salary or wages.

Did the tax brackets change on 1 April 2026?

No. The 10.5% rate still covers income up to $15,600 and the 39% top rate still starts above $180,000.

What is my top tax rate on $100,000?

33% on each extra dollar, plus 1.75% ACC levy, so 34.75% in total. Your average income tax rate is 22.9%.

Do I need to file a tax return?

Most salary and wage earners do not. IRD issues an automatic income tax assessment after 31 March, and pays any refund to your bank account.
