How to add or remove GST
- Add GST: multiply the price by 1.15. $100 becomes $115.
- Remove GST: divide the GST-inclusive price by 1.15. $115 becomes $100.
- GST content: multiply the inclusive price by 3 and divide by 23. Taking 15% off an inclusive price gives the wrong answer.

Who has to register
You must register for GST when your turnover from taxable activity has been, or is likely to be, more than $60,000 in 12 months. Below that, registering is optional. Once registered you add GST to your prices, claim back the GST on business costs and file GST returns monthly, two-monthly or six-monthly.
Zero-rated and exempt
Exports and the sale of a business as a going concern are zero-rated: GST is charged at 0%, and the seller can still claim GST on costs. Financial services and residential rent are exempt, so no GST is charged and the related GST on costs cannot be claimed. Food, medicines and children’s clothing are all standard-rated in New Zealand.
Prices shown to consumers must include GST. Quotes between businesses are often exclusive, so check which one you have before you compare.
Common questions
How do I work out GST backwards?
Divide the GST-inclusive price by 1.15. The difference is the GST. For $230 that is $200.00 plus $30.00 GST.
What is 15% GST on $1,000?
$150, making $1,150 including GST.
Is there GST on food in NZ?
Yes. Unlike Australia or the UK, New Zealand charges GST on almost everything, including fresh food.
When do I have to register for GST?
When your turnover has gone over, or will go over, $60,000 in any 12-month period.
