How your take-home pay is worked out

  1. Ordinary wages. Your monthly salary and fixed allowances count as ordinary wages. CPF is paid only on the first $8,000 a month, the ordinary wage ceiling for 2026.
  2. Employee CPF. Up to age 55 you pay 20% of those wages, rounded down to the dollar. The rate falls in steps after 55, 60, 65 and 70.
  3. Take-home pay is your salary minus your own CPF share. Nothing else is deducted each month for most employees, apart from small community fund donations such as CDAC, ECF, MBMF or SINDA, which are left out here.
  4. Employer CPF of up to 17% is paid on top of your salary. It does not come out of your pay but it goes into your CPF accounts.
  5. Income tax is not withheld from your salary. IRAS assesses it the year after you earn the money, so the calculator shows it separately as an amount to set aside.

On $5,000 a month you take home $4,000.00, and your employer puts another $850 into your CPF. At $8,000 the employee share reaches its cap of $1,600, so someone on $10,000 pays the same $1,600 and takes home $8,400.00.

What changed in 2026

From 1 January 2026 the ordinary wage ceiling rose to $8,000, the last step of the increase announced in Budget 2023. Workers above 55 to 60 now pay 18% with 16% from the employer, and workers above 60 to 65 pay 12.5% each. A further rise for these two groups is due from 1 January 2027.

Permanent residents and foreigners

In the first two years of PR status both sides pay lower graduated rates unless employer and employee agree to pay the full rates. On $5,000 a first-year PR takes home $4,750.00, and a second-year PR $4,250.00. Employment Pass and S Pass holders are not CPF members, so their full salary is paid out and only income tax applies.

Your payslip can differ slightly if you have unpaid leave, overtime or allowances that change from month to month, or if your employer deducts a self-help group donation.

Questions and answers

What is my take-home pay on $5,000 a month?

$4,000.00 a month if you are 55 or below and a citizen or PR from the 3rd year. Your CPF share is $1,000, and your employer adds $850 on top.

Is income tax deducted from my salary in Singapore?

No. Employers do not withhold tax for resident employees. IRAS sends a bill the year after, and on $5,000 a month the estimate for a full year is $1,040. Many people pay it by GIRO in up to 12 instalments.

How much CPF do I pay above $8,000 a month?

The same as at $8,000: $1,600 a month if you are 55 or below. Salary above the ordinary wage ceiling has no CPF, which is why take-home pay rises faster above it.

Does take-home pay change when I turn 55?

Yes. From the month after your 55th birthday your share drops to 18%. On $5,000 that raises take-home pay to $4,100.00, and after 60 it becomes $4,375.00.

Is employer CPF part of my salary?

Not of the salary on your contract. It is paid on top, straight into your CPF accounts, so it counts towards your total pay package but not your cash take-home pay.
