How the conversion works

A month is not four weeks. There are 52 weeks in a year, so the average month has 52 ÷ 12, or about 4.33, weeks. Monthly salary = hourly rate × hours per week × 52 ÷ 12.

Going the other way, MOM uses the same logic: hourly rate = 12 × monthly salary ÷ (52 × weekly hours). That is the formula behind overtime pay. A $3,500 salary is worth $18.36 an hour at 44 hours a week, and $20.19 at 40 hours.

Part-time work

Part-time employees work fewer than 35 hours a week. Their leave, holiday and sick leave entitlements are pro-rated to their hours, so compare offers on an hourly basis. Singapore has no general minimum wage, but cleaning, security, landscape and some other sectors have Progressive Wage Model floors.

Remember that CPF is deducted from the monthly figure. On $3,000 a month, a citizen aged 55 or below takes home $2,400.00.
