How it works
Each month your top-up is added. With monthly compounding, one month of interest is added straight away. With yearly compounding, interest is worked out every month but only added at the end of the year, which is how CPF credits interest.
CPF interest rates
| Account | Rate a year |
|---|---|
| Ordinary Account | 2.5% |
| Special, MediSave and Retirement Accounts | 4% floor until 31 December 2026 |
| Extra interest | 1% on the first $60,000 of combined balances, with up to $20,000 from the OA |
| Extra from age 55 | 2% on the first $30,000, and 1% on the next $30,000 |
Examples over 10 years
| Start | Monthly | Rate | After 10 years |
|---|---|---|---|
| $20,000 | $0 | 2.5% | $25,602 |
| $20,000 | $0 | 4% | $29,605 |
| $10,000 | $500 | 2.5% | $80,931 |
| $10,000 | $500 | 4% | $88,400 |
| $0 | $1,000 | 3% | $139,802 |
The examples use yearly compounding as CPF does. The gap between 2.5% and 4% is why many members move OA savings into their SA while they are under 55, although that transfer cannot be reversed.
T-bills and fixed deposits
Singapore Government Treasury bills pay their return at maturity, so for a 6-month T-bill enter the cut-off yield and roll it over each time it matures. The yield changes at every auction, so check the latest result from MAS before you compare it with a fixed deposit or the CPF OA.
