How to add or remove SST
- Add 8% service tax: multiply by 1.08. RM100 becomes RM108.00.
- Remove 8% service tax: divide by 1.08. RM108 contains RM8.00 of tax.
- Add 10% sales tax: multiply by 1.1. RM250 becomes RM275.00.
Sales tax is charged once, by the manufacturer or importer, so it is already inside shop prices and is not shown on your receipt. Service tax is charged by the business providing the service and usually appears as a separate line on the bill, for example at a restaurant or on a phone plan.
What changed in July 2025
The government widened SST from 1 July 2025. More non-essential goods now carry sales tax at 5% or 10%, and service tax now covers rental and leasing, construction, financial services, private healthcare, private education and beauty treatments, each with its own registration threshold and exemptions. Most businesses must register once taxable turnover passes RM500,000 a year.
SST is not GST. There is no input tax credit for most businesses, so tax paid on costs is not claimed back the way it was under GST before 2018.
FAQ
How do I calculate 8% service tax?
Multiply the price by 0.08 for the tax, or by 1.08 for the total. On RM250 the service tax is RM20.00.
Why is restaurant service tax 6% and not 8%?
Food and beverage services stayed at 6% when the general rate rose to 8% in March 2024, together with telecommunications, parking and logistics.
Is the service charge the same as service tax?
No. The 10% service charge some restaurants add is kept by the business. Service tax is paid to the government, and only registered businesses may charge it.
Is SST charged on groceries?
Most essential food, such as rice, fresh meat, fish, vegetables and fruit, is exempt from sales tax.
