How it works

With monthly crediting, each month your top-up is added and a twelfth of the yearly rate is paid on the whole balance. With yearly crediting, the return is paid once a year on the opening balance plus each top-up for the months it was held, which is close to how ASB and EPF work out their payouts on your average balance.

The rate and the time matter more than small changes to the top-up. RM500 a month at 5% for 20 years grows to RM206,373, while RM120,000 of it is money you put in.

Tax on returns

For individuals, interest from licensed banks in Malaysia, ASB distributions and EPF dividends are generally not taxed, so the figures here are close to what you keep. Inflation still reduces what the final amount will buy, so compare your rate with the consumer price index when you judge real growth.

Which setting should I use for EPF?

Yearly crediting. EPF declares its dividend once a year and credits it on the average daily balance, which the yearly setting approximates.
