Reduced rates

If you are aged 70 or over, or you hold a full medical card, and your income is €60,000 or less, you pay 0.5% on the first €12,012 and 2% on the rest. A GP visit card does not qualify. Medical card holders should tell Revenue, as the reduced rate is not applied automatically.

What changed for 2026

The top of the 2% band moved from €27,382 to €28,700 so that a full-time worker on the minimum wage stays out of the 3% band. The other rates did not change.

USC is charged on gross pay before pension contributions, and there are no credits against it. Social welfare payments such as the State Pension are exempt.
