How to add or remove sales tax
- Add tax: multiply the price by 1 plus the total rate. $100 in Ontario becomes $113.00.
- Remove tax: divide the price including tax by 1 plus the rate. $113.00 in Ontario was $100.00 before HST. Taking 13% off $113.00 gives the wrong answer.
- Quebec: GST and QST are both charged on the price before tax, so the combined rate is 14.975%.
Nova Scotia's HST fell to 14% on 1 April 2025. Alberta and the three territories charge only the 5% GST. In British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba the provincial tax is separate from GST and is administered by the province, with its own list of exempt items.
What is taxed
Basic groceries, prescription drugs and most medical devices are zero-rated for GST/HST. Restaurant meals, snacks, soft drinks, clothing and most services are taxable. Provincial sales taxes follow their own rules: British Columbia exempts children's clothing, while Manitoba and Saskatchewan exempt most food. Always check the rule for the province where the goods are delivered, because that decides the rate.
Businesses with more than $30,000 of taxable sales over four calendar quarters must register for GST/HST and charge it.
Common questions
How do I calculate HST backwards?
Divide the total by 1.13 in Ontario (1.15 in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador or PEI, 1.14 in Nova Scotia). The difference is the HST. For example, $226.00 in Ontario is $200.00 plus $26.00 HST.
What is the sales tax in Quebec?
5% GST plus 9.975% QST, both on the price before tax: 14.975% in total. On $100 that is $14.98.
Which provinces have no provincial sales tax?
Alberta, Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut charge only the 5% GST.
What is the difference between GST and HST?
HST is GST and the provincial tax combined into one rate, collected by the CRA. It applies in Ontario and the four Atlantic provinces. Elsewhere GST is charged alone or next to a separate provincial tax.
