Questions

When do I start repaying HELP?

In 2026–27 compulsory repayments start once your repayment income is above $69,528.

What changed with the marginal repayment system?

Since 2025–26 you repay a percentage of the income above the threshold, rather than a percentage of your whole income. That removed the jump where earning $1 more could cost thousands in repayments.

What is repayment income?

Taxable income plus reportable fringe benefits, total net investment loss, reportable super contributions and exempt foreign employment income.

Does my employer take HELP out of my pay?

Yes, if you tell them you have a study loan they withhold extra tax each pay. The exact compulsory repayment is worked out when you lodge your return.
