How your take-home pay is worked out

  1. Personal Allowance. The first £12,570 of income is tax-free. Above £100,000 it shrinks by £1 for every £2, and it is gone at £125,140.
  2. Income tax at 20%, 40% and 45% in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, or at Scotland's six rates (19% to 48%) if you live in Scotland.
  3. National Insurance at 8% on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270 a year, and 2% above that. It is the same across the UK.
  4. Student loan repayments of 9% above your plan's threshold, plus 6% for a Postgraduate Loan.
  5. Pension by salary sacrifice comes off before both tax and National Insurance, which is why it lowers your take-home pay by less than it costs.

On £30,000 a year you keep £25,120, or £2,093.30 a month. At £60,000 the higher rate applies to the top £9,730, and take-home pay is £45,357. Someone on £50,000 in Scotland takes home £38,024, £1,496 less than in England.

Your payslip may differ by a few pounds a month: payroll software applies tax and NI to each pay period, while this calculator works on the full year.

Questions

How much is £30,000 after tax in the UK?

£25,120 a year in 2026–27 (£2,093.30 a month), after £3,486 income tax and £1,394 National Insurance, for someone in England, Wales or Northern Ireland.

Why do I lose so much between £100,000 and £125,140?

Your Personal Allowance falls by £1 for every £2 you earn over £100,000. On £110,000 it is £7,570, and each extra pound in that range costs 60% in income tax plus 2% NI.

Is the calculator right for Scotland?

Yes. Choose Scotland to use the six Scottish rates for 2026–27. National Insurance and student loan rules are the same in every part of the UK.

Does it include my pension?

Only if you enter a salary sacrifice percentage. Pensions taken after tax (relief at source) do not change your tax or NI, so leave the box at 0 and subtract your contribution yourself.

What tax code does it assume?

1257L, the standard code that gives the full £12,570 allowance. An emergency or K code changes your monthly deductions until HMRC corrects it.
